Taking Back your Life
Mindfulness
experience more of you
The over-arching word, Mindfulness, has had a tremendous surge in popularity in the past decade. The practice has moved from a somewhat obscure Buddhist concept founded 2600 years ago to a mainstream practice. Mindfulness has been used to refer to a mental state of awareness, the practice that promotes this awareness, a way of processing information and a character trait.
Among the many definitions, my favorite is “moment-to-moment awareness of one’s experience without judgment.” This mental state allows us to notice mental habits (some useful and some not) to begin sorting out the differences.
Mindfulness-Based Interventions are practices or activities, such as meditation and many others that are used to help you change your state of being. That being, how your mind, your heart or your body feels. They are ways of accessing the present moment for different reasons. Like a tool in a toolbox that perform different functions, these tools are much the same. Practice using them daily, then in any moment pick the one to best assist you.
Moments Can Range From:
- A car just cut you off in traffic.
- You receive devastating news about a good friend.
- You have been given a scary diagnosis.
- Watching the news creates so much uncertainty about the world.
- Experiencing physical chronic pain.
- Can’t get to sleep at night and or stay asleep.
Tools Can Range From:
- Body Scan
- Progressive Muscle Relaxation
- Imagery
- Visualization
- Breathing Techniques
- Positive Affirmations / Mantra
- Gentle Movement
- Formal and Informal Meditation
- Cultivate Qualities of Mindfulness
